A rigorous descriptive cataloging of the more than 500 pieces (silver items, art, photographs, ponchos (gaucho garments) and other objects of daily use) that account for the diverse cultural settlements in this territory during a convulsive period of social and political organization. These patrimonial pieces (some reproduced in full-page plates) lend from private collections and from the holdings of diverse museums reconstruct the diversity and richness of the customs and traditions of the pampas and the Patagonia throughout the 19th century. Based in the narrations of world visitors and intellectuals -such as Lucio V. Mansilla and cacique Calfucurá- and local literature, these objects (silverware, and decorated objects and ponchos as signs of power) and their aesthetic value contribute to a new perception on the daily life and social and political structures of the inhabitants of the far away prairie: horse riding "caciques" and mapuche Indians and women adorned with costly jewels. The book includes the only compendium published to date on the Tehuelche Capes written by Sergio Caviglia. Published on the occasion of the exhibition "Las Pampas: Arte y Cultura en el Siglo XIX" held in 2010 at the Fundacion Proa, Buenos Aires. Fruto del interés por las culturas autóctonas, Claudia Caraballo de Quentin nos presenta en esta ocasión el amplio panorama de la producción artística de los pueblos originarios que habitaron la región pampeana y patagónica de nuestro país. La platería, el ajuar de la mujer, los objetos de uso doméstico y los textiles - entre los que se destacan muy especialmente los ponchos - son objeto de análisis e inéditos estudios técnicos. Hay también un espacio dedicado al poncho inglés, singular producto de la revolución industrial que llegó a nuestras tierras.
