Rio de Janeiro: Folha Seca, 2007. color & b/w plates, ports., facs., cat., bio/chron., bibl., color pict. fldg. wrps. Item #88589

Author Loredano has been collecting for the past years the work of caricaturist José Carlos de Brito e Cunho, better known as J. Carlos. Along this process, there was a decade missing, the 1920's. During that period (1922-1930), J. Carlos was designer and the artistic director of the weekly magazine "O Malho", creating close to 1200 political caricatures to illustrate the weekly issues. The present edition rescues from the National Library (Rio de Janeiro) the covers and main cartoons J. Carlos created for the magazine, characteristic for it's frequent anarchist, anarcho-syndicalists and socialist messages. The book presents full page color reproductions of the sardonic and ironical cover caricatures inspired in the cultural, economic, social and political events of Brazil during the 1920's. Contents: O Rio de J. Carlos -- Carnaval -- O Brasil, por exemplo -- Futebol -- Labaro estrelado -- Economia -- Internacional -- Perigo vermelho -- Testamento dos Vencidos. "The book is part of the project Memória Gráfica Brasileira, sponsored by the program Petrobras Cultural"-T.p. verso.
