A collection of early 20th century documental photographs of the colonization and modernization process of the city of Valdivia and the region of Los Lagos in southern Chile by traveling photographer Knittel (b. Chile 1876-1958) and his friend Volkmann. The archive is an historic visual account of the city's most important social and cultural events, the Mapuche ethnic communities, the landscapes of the National Park Puyehue along with registering the effects of 2 great disasters in Valdivia: the great fire of December, 1909 and the flooding in July 1922.
