A major and a beautifully printed history of the urban transformations of the city of Salvador in Brazil during the second half of the 19th century as a consequence of the construction of the first public services (transportation, electricity and water). The study discloses that the construction of the net of urban services was possible in large extent by means of a successful partnership between the local government and private initiative. The book is illustrated with more than 200 images (a great part never published before) and is the final research work of the project Serviços Urbanos e Movimentos Sociais na Bahia: 1846-1900 and was winner of the prize for first edition Prêmio Clarival do Prado Valladares.
