Catalogue for the exhibition at the Museo de San Carlos in Mexico City dedicated to José Ribera (Jusepe de Rivera), el Españoleto, (b. Naples 1591-1652), a clear example of the Spain's Golden Century art and the influence of religion in his splendid paintings of saints and scenes from the Gospels. Ribera lived and worked in Naples (then a Spanish province); where he produced his paintings extraordinarily y realistic in the chiaro obscuro style. He was also considered a master printmaker in his days. The exhibition reflects the artist obsession for religious fanaticism, portraits of terrifying figures and proselytism.
