Puerto Rico: Chase Manhattan Bank, 27 de marzo- 18 de mayo de 1981/1 de junio- 31 de julio 1981. b/w plates, cat., color pict. wrps. (Ex-libris mkgs.). Item #57957

The group exhibition of clay sculpture shows a clear trend towards monumental expression, both in the concept and in the direction followed by the members of the Manos Group. The perfection of the forms in Sylvia Blanco's work is giving her expression an increasingly monumental character. Blanco, Espinosa and Suárez have been executing murals and wall plates in clay where they combine color with sculptural effects. The greater permanence of the mural, its impact and scale, as well as its monumental character, make it one of the main directions in the development of the work of these artists. On the other hand, the durability of the clay makes it an ideal material for mural expression.
The Grupo Manos production and its development towards monumental expression is related to an important trend in the complex picture of contemporary art: the rescue of materials and procedures that were traditionally associated with crafts such as clay, fibers, fabrics, and his exaltation to the field of the "higher arts."
