The four texts that comprise the present edition are fundamental for a better understanding of the Chilean art history between late 19th century and early 20th, the stimulating dispute between defenders and detractors of the colonial world which culminated with the dismantling of the liberal and republican interest for the culture of the colony. In those decades is when the idea, still dominant today in the most conservative historiography, that in Chile there was never a colonial culture or Baroque art which. The present historic documents are evidence of the opposite: "To implement the doctrine of progress, in the 19th century predominated a policy which choose to bring down most of the colonial buildings or transform them until they were unrecognizable, a process that would transfer also to the elimination of private houses, old baroque furniture, portraits of ancestors (...) antiquarians and collectors discovered and saved from loss or neglect those objects that a complete citizen promotion had rejected as tasteless or considered them aberrations within the imponderable pattern known as 'good taste'."
