The Museum Lasar Segall/Ibram, in São Paulo (SP), initiated a program of exhibitions in 2012 with the opening of the Exhibition "Poéticas do Mangue", an exhibition that brings together a collection of close to 100 expressionist pieces, including drawings, prints and paintings created between the 1920 and the mid-1960's. The "Mangue" was a large zone of prostitution along the streets of the port in Rio de Janeiro, a favorite night place of famous Samba musicians, intellectuals and artists and according to poet Manuel Bandeira "represented a history of a Brazil that resisted itself to modernity, thanks to the live presence of an extraordinary syncretism: linguistic (Portuguese, Tupi, African), religious (Catholic and African) and musical ("Sambas de tia Ciata", "choros de cavaquinho, pandeiro e reco-reco"), and where sounds of musical instruments and carnival references are melted in one." The influence of the post WWII German expressionists and its two main themes (female prostitution and the decadence of the bourgeois society) had a profound effect on the aesthetic vision of many modern Brazilian artists. Lasar Segall, was the first artist to use the bohemian district in different and constant ways as inspiration in his art work, followed by Di Cavalcanti, Otto Dix, George Grosz, Cícero Dias, Hélio Oiticica, amongst others.
