The book brings together 44 photographs of the "Twelve Prophets" carved by colonial sculptor Antônio Francisco Lisboa "Aleijadinho". The stone statues, completed between 1795 and 1805, adorn the parapets and the front courtyard of the sanctuary of Santuário do Bom Jesus de Matosinhos, located in the Brazilian municipality of Congonhas do Campo, (MG), and considered one of the high points of Brazilian Baroque. In 1950, the Serviço de Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional (National Historical and Artistic Heritage Service) assigned Marcel Gautherot, a French photographer living in Brazil, to document the sculptures. Gautherot managed to capture the elegance of the design lines of the sanctuary and the technique of the sculptural work. The book includes a poem by Francisco Alvim and an essay by historian Iris Kantor, on the historical meanings of worship in the sanctuary. She also describes the entire process of construction of the monuments, erected in several steps, between the 18th and 19th centuries.
