Itinerant exhibition of a collection of 83 traditional masks of the popular culture of Nicaragua and Central America (Guatemala, México and Perú) from the holdings of the IHNCA and that to present days have never been exhibited in public. Their recent restoration by the Valencia Institute of Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage (IVC+R) highlighted their patrimonial value and explored the influences in the creation process: on one side the influence of the resulting mix between the Indian and African cultures and on the other the influence of the Colonial religious sculpture, an aesthetic combination reflected in the forms, designs and colors in many of the masks. The traditional elaboration of the masks in Nicaragua, still alive today by the "mascareros" follows ancestral techniques using wood and paper mache. This is the first time the collection has been studied in detail and cataloged and is the outcome of a parallel study between Valencia and Nicaragua researchers to determine the origin and similarities with other masks used in religious festivities, particularly in Spain. The itinerant exhibition curated by Rafael Gil Salinas (UV) and Margarita Vannini (IHNCA-UCA) will be held in diverse venues in Spain, Europe and Latin America during 2011. Published on the occasion of the exhibition "Máscaras y Enmascarados" held in 2011 in diverse venues in Spain, Italy and Latin America.
