Beautiful edition featuring black and white photographic series on the lifestyle of the caranguejeiros, (artisan crab fishing) from the manguezals of the municipality of Vitoria, Brazil. Visually registers the irregular urban development of the region for the last 50 years and its consequences on the wetlands environment and the crab population. In the first part, anthropologist Samain comments on the 1942 anthropology essay "Balinese character. A photographic analysis" by British Gregory Bateson and Margaret Mead founders of visual anthropology, a work that inspired the study presented in the second part of the book. Biologist and photographer Alves, tutored by Samain, presented the resulting research in visual ethnology to obtain his Masters degree in Unicamp.
