The Salon is the oldest one sponsored by the Brazilian state and was reformulated with this edition. Rather than publish a general catalogue, they chose to publish critical catalogues alongside the exhibition of works by artists who received prizes in the 15th and 16th salons: Augusto Herkenhoff and Christiana Moraes; Elyeser Szturm and Marcos Chaves, respectively. Augusto Herkenhoff (b. 1965) award was for the 1995 work "Remembering the '70s (Lembrança dos Anos 70)" as a metaphor of incomprehension based on Brazilian pop singer, Caetano Veloso's famous statement in the 70s " given to the jury and spectators in the packed Sao Paulo International Song Festival "You just don't get it".
