"The conquest of Guatemala was brutal, prolonged and complex, charged with intrigue, deception, confusion, disconcerting and intimidating. And nothing definite, however, continues to be perceived as a confrontation whose interests were evident and whose results were decisive, especially in favor of the Spaniards. The objective of "terrorizing the earth" is to make a critical reassessment of the drama, which requires us to re-examine the events and circumstances in light not only of new findings but of a deeper awareness of the roles played by indigenous peoples, especially kaqchikeles. Their resistance, transformed from allies into enemies by the actions of Pedro de Alvarado (1485-1541) in the first months of the invasion, has never been sufficiently represented and integrated into the narrative. However, stigmas such as corruption, impunity, as well as intimidation and blatant rejection of the law, hallmarks of Guatemala to this day, have a fertile progenitor in Alvarado."
