This third number of the series "Lectures in Theory of Architecture" is dedicated to the understanding architecture as an object. The book is centered in the theory of architecture from a critical perspective and the observation of architecture around its complex cultural context. "In the professional world of architecture, two forces coexist, on one hand, dealing with the buildings and spaces that defy our desire to understand them and, on the other, the need to invent new constructions. The architect is a player on the field that receives (objects) in a world of references and throws back (projects)." (Our translation) --Front flap. The authors of the texts that comprise the series are from different Brazilian universities and include one international guest that in this edition is French historian Jean Castex. The other six authors are all participants of the annual lectures "História das Teorias em Arquitetura" (History of Theories in Architecture) organized for the past eight years as part of the Programa de Pós-Graduação em Arquitetura (Post-Graduation Program in Architecture, PRO-ARQ) of the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the UFRJ.
