Carioca photographer Militão Augusto de Azevedo (Rio de Janeiro, 1837 - São Paulo, 1905) is considered one of the most important photographers in Brazil of the second half of the 19th century and was the precursor of the graphic documentation of the city of São Paulo. The present book includes 113 glass negatives pictures of the city from the Collection Militão Augusto de Azevedo of the Photographic Archives of the Casa da Imagem, and includes full page reproductions of the photographs of the "Álbum Comparativo de Vistas da Cidade de São Paulo (1862-1887)" (1887) from the collection of the Biblioteca Mário de Andrade. The vintage images of the city scenes were shown in parallel in intervals of 25 years showing the transformations of the colonial placid town during the 19th century.
