Photography reached Brazil in the following year to its introduction in France (1839). The first images preserved in the collection of the National Archive date from the 1850s. They were produced by photographers such as Henrique Klumb, Juan Gutierrez, Marc Ferrez, Insley Pacheco, Joaqim Feliciano Alves Carneiro, Alberto Hewnschel and the duo Gaensly & Lindermann among others. What can be seen here is some of these originals, from mid-nineteenth century to the first years of the twentieth century. It depicts, in pictures and landscapes, a society which started to come to know itself at a speed, contrasts and forms hitherto unknown. ENGLISH AND PORTUGUESE TEXT.
