Documentation and study of the 20th century fine art of the Caribbean region of Colombia by noted art critic and historian, Álvaro Medina, who describes the unique local art in his presentation: "The study the reader has in his hands is aimed at valuing the art created in the Colombian Caribbean since 1939 and 1940. The reason is simple. Leo Matiz published in 1939, in the magazine Estampa, his most famous photograph. In 1940 an artist just to celebrate his 20th birthday named Enrique Grau was admitted in the Salón de Artistas Nacionales, causing admiration amongst critics. The two dates are situated in the moment Colombia was beginning to experiment the best moment of its avant-garde modernism. Its main authors were Guillermo Wiedemann, Leo Matiz, Enrique Grau, Alejandro Obregón, Eduardo Ramírez Villamizar, Edgar Negret, Fernando Botero and Antonio Roda, mentioned here in the order they became publicly known."--p. [5]. The artistic movement of the region was best represented by a group who emerged in the 1930's and second group of artists who started their careers after the decades of the 1940's. The author has centered his study in 7 artists. Five artists that represent a brilliant chapter of the national art: Matiz, Grau and Obregón from the first group and, Porras and Nereo from the second group. A sixth artist, Orlando "Figurita" Rivera, although scarcely known in Colombia was highly recognized locally, and Noé León, who started his career when he was 50 years old, soon after became one of the most successful painters of the 20th century in Colombia."El estudio que el lector tiene entre sus manos se propone valorar las artes gestadas en el Caribe colombiano a partir de 1939 y 1940.
