The conceptual works of Anna Bella Geiger are the focus of this study. Beginning in the 1960s, her works are characterized for her ideas questioning the nature of art and its system. The artist also deals with ideological order conflicts and politics of Brazilian history as she experienced it. Her key themes of work cover education, the aboriginal question and the formation of a proud national identity, and the military regimen. The form and the presentation of these objects seek participation of the public. Anna Bella contribution to contemporary art in Brazil has been significant. She has bequeathed an approach between the artistic field and other areas of human production that include ethical, historical, social, economic tensions, and artistic politics. This study includes her extensive work on: artists books, experimental art, video art, installation art and more. An extensive bibliography is included. It is based on the doctoral thesis of the author completed in 2004.
