In 1996 Montevideo was declared Cultural Capital of Latin America, a magna exhibition that involved different cultural institutions and art galleries was organized around the walking avenue Peatonal Sarandi and represented a artistic panorama of the transformation of the city of Montevideo and the protagonist role of the city in various 20th century plastic art expressions that included paintings, sculptures, public art, drawings, photography, architecture, cinema, video, etc. from colonial to the 1990's.
