A biweekly compendium of information about commerce, trade, and politics in Brazil, the River Plate and South America during the period covered. An excellent primary source for tracing the beginnings of the War of the Triple Alliance (and British machinations relating to the same), a bloody and devastating conflict which broke out in 1864 between Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay on one side against Paraguay on the other The bimonthly was founded in Nov. 7, 1863 by W. Hadfield and Charles Dunlop. The latter was the principal editor. It terminated publication after 16 volumes as the above named until Dec. 23, 1878 when it dropped the name South American Journal. and resumed publication in 1879 until 1951 under the name South American Journal & Brazil & River Plate Mail . From 1951 to 1955 it became the South American Journal. OCLC mentions four institutions with holdings.. VERY SCARCE serial. A fascinating read.
