Mardonio Magaña (1865-1948) was discovered by Diego Rivera in 1929 when Magaña was the 55 year old doorkeeper of the Escuela al Aire Libre de Coyoacán, and worked in his sculptures during his free time. His free style of strong and square wood and stone sculptures reflect the feelings, traditions and values of the rural people in Mexico as well as his urban experiences. Considered by Rivera as the greatest of sculptors. As his works are mainly in private collections this first major exhibition catalogue is the best reference. ENGLISH AND SPANISH TEXT.
