Dolores Concepcion Martinez, better known as Lola Alvarez Bravo (b. Mexico 1903-1993) was a firsthand witness of the social and cultural life in Mexico soon after the Revolution. Lola made a photographic chronicle of the life in Mexico pictures for the following 5 decades and her photographs are considered visual documents of the history of Mexican society in the 20th century. The present catalogue presents a virtually unknown collection of her photographs (courtesy of the Gonzalez Rendón family), with extraordinary examples of her early work produced next to her mentor and husband from 1925 to 1951, photographer Manuel Alvarez Bravo, works from when she was discovering her own artistic path and of her full aesthetic development. Included are some lesser-known aspects of her photographic work, such as her photomontages, her collaboration with the magazine "El Maestro Rural", her extraordinary talent for portraiture (mostly portraits of her artist friends) and how certain Surrealist works influenced her. "This exhibition, a thorough retrospective of her work, features photographs by both Lola and her students. The works of Mariana Yampolsky and Raul Abarca reveal the continuities in this process of teaching and learning and the benefits they bought to our photographic tradition." --Page 9. Published on the occasion of an itinerant exhibition presented at the Museo Casa Estudio Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo starting Oct. 12, 2011, and subsequently at the Museum of Latin American Art, Long Beach, Calif., Sept. 23, 2011-Jan. 20, 2013, and at the Center for Creative Photography, Tucson, Ariz., Mar. 30-June 23, 2013.
